Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Where Canada is with regards to energy is something worth discussing now that we’re into the early days of the new Justin Trudeau government. A new book is a great way to look into the future. After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians is a new book from the public intellectual Gordon Laxer. He outlines a vision for Canada as a low-carbon society, one that’s prepared for the next global oil supply crisis, using its own resources, and that eventually uses less oil, and a number of forms of renewable energy. Gordon Laxer is the founding director and former head of the Parkland Institute at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He is a political economist and professor emeritus at the University of Alberta. He has authored several books including Open for Business: The Roots of Foreign Ownership in Canada. This new book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program from Muskoka, Ontario today, Gordon Laxer; Dr. Laxer, good morning.
